This session focuses on interest-based and integrated learning approaches. Drawing upon examples from teaching NCEA Level 1 and Level 2 English students, we will look at how we have re-engaged students who would otherwise been disengaged in the subject and how this has had positive outcomes for the learners. We will discuss strategies we have used to form relationships with students and used this as a springboard to develop individual learning plans. We will share examples of how this can look in a face-to-face and online setting and how the concepts of 'ako' and 'whanaungatanga' have underpinned our practice. What does it look like when students are at the centre, driving the learning and bringing their knowledge to the table? What are the implications of this for us as educators?
