"Let’s at least do what we can to understand why we are so easily divided into hostile groups, each one certain of its righteousness” – Jonathan Haidt, The Righteous Mind (2012). This year I used Jonathan Haidt’s Moral Foundations Theory to teach my year 10 class about the importance of building relationships, seeing things from others’ perspectives, and particularly for understanding “….why it’s so hard for us to get along”. I used this lens to analyse a number of texts, but will focus this presentation on Willie Davis’ short story Ka Kite Bro. Haidt’s theory allows students to think carefully about how they justify their decisions, and how this foreknowledge is key to making positive connections with others.
